Etymology: < French arriéré behind the times, outdated (early 19th cent.), specific sense development of arriéré (of a payment or the person making it) delayed (13th cent. in Old French as arrierré with reference to the person making a payment, 1611 in Cotgrave with reference to a payment), use as adjective of past participle of arriérer to delay, postpone (something) (13th cent. in Old French; < ariere behind: see arrear adv.).
Obsolete.
Behind the times, backward, or outdated; strongly conservative or reactionary. Cf. arrière-guard n. 2. Now rare.Not fully naturalized in English.
