Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin rupicola , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin rupicola (1760 as a specific name in zoology, 1805 as a specific epithet in botany), specific use of feminine of post-classical Latin rupicolus (1539 or earlier; < rūpi- , combining form of rūpēs steep rocky cliff, crag (see rupicapra n.) + -colus : see -colous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French rupicole (1789).
Ecology.
Of a plant or animal: growing or living on rocks; = rupicoline adj. Cf. petricolous adj.
