Etymology: < German Meistersinger (Middle High German meistersinger < meister master n.1 + singer singer n.1). Compare French Meistersinger (1786), and earlier mastersinger n.In modern German -singer is restricted to use in compounds with medieval reference, as Meistersinger , Minnesinger minnesinger n.; the usual word for ‘singer’ is Sänger (compare Meistersänger n.). The plural form Meistersinger is after the German plural form.
A member of any of the German guilds for lyric poets and musicians which flourished in the 14th to 16th centuries, known for their elaborate technique. Cf. Meistergesang n., minnesinger n. Also figurative.
