Any of various kinds of popular music originally (and principally) associated with African-American performers, esp. a style prominent during the late 1940s and 1950s derived from or influenced by the blues and jazz, typically having a strong rhythm and featuring a horn section. Abbreviated R&B n.Popularized (and often said to have been coined) by Jerry Wexler of Billboard magazine in 1949, when the term was adopted by that magazine to describe all forms of African-American popular music, including blues, jazz, and gospel, replacing the term race record (see race record at race n.6 Compounds 3). Later used to describe soul, funk, etc.
