Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French retrié.
Etymology: < French retrié, noun (mid 18th cent. or earlier; compare from a similar date papier retrié in the same sense; < re re- prefix + trié , past participle of trier try v.), denoting slightly imperfect paper apparently identified in a sorting process occurring after the first grade sheets had been selected.
Papermaking. Now historical.
Damaged or defective sheets of paper.
