Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: respect v.; Latin respect- , respicere , -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < respect v. (compare respect v. 4a) or its etymon classical Latin respect-, past participial stem of respicere + -ant suffix1.
Chiefly Heraldry. Frequently as postmodifier.
1. Of an animal (esp. one of a pair): facing another animal.
