Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Latin Quirīnālis; Italian Quirinale.
Etymology: Partly < classical Latin Quirīnālis of or belonging to Quirinus, especially in collis Quirīnālis the Quirinal Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome ( < Quirīnus , the name of a god worshipped on the Quirinal Hill at Rome + -ālis -al suffix1), and partly (especially in sense B. 2) < Italian Quirinale, noun (mid 14th cent. or earlier; 1868 with reference to the Roman palace and the authority residing there), quirinale, adjective (a1337 or earlier designating the hill, a1692 with reference to the Roman palace; a1332 in sense ‘Roman’). Compare Middle French, French Quirinal (in le mont Quirinal: 1354 or earlier).The god Quirinus had functions apparently resembling those of Mars (compare quot. 1835 at sense A.). With quirinal gate (compare quot. 1735 at sense A.) compare classical Latin porta Quirīnālis.
