Origin: Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin replicatorius ; replicate v., -ory suffix2.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin replicatorius concerned with replication (c1379, 1446 in British sources, in legal context) < classical Latin replicāt- , past participial stem of replicāre replicate v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2. In sense 2 probably directly < replicate v. + -ory suffix2.
1. Of the nature of or relating to a reply. Now rare.Chiefly in legal contexts; cf. reply n. 2, replication n. 5a.
