Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin polyphagus ; poly- comb. form, -phage comb. form.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin polyphagus ( < ancient Greek πολυϕάγος eating to excess (Hippocrates) < πολυ- poly- comb. form + -ϕάγος : see -phagous comb. form). In sense 2 < poly- comb. form + -phage comb. form, after polyphagous adj. Compare French polyphage (1903 in sense 2; also 1578 as adjective in Middle French: see polyphagous adj.), Italian polifago (a1569).
1. A person who eats to excess. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
