Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin polyphagia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polyphagia eating to excess (a1536 in Erasmus) < poly- poly- comb. form + -phagia -phagia comb. form. Compare Italian polifagia (a1686), Spanish polifagia (1490). Compare polyphagy n.
1. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Excessive eating or appetite, esp. as a sign or symptom of disease; hyperphagia.
