释义

bilcockn.

/ˈbɪlkɒk/
Forms: 1600s–1800s bilcock, 1800s billcock.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: a first element of uncertain identity, cock n.1
Etymology: Apparently < a first element of uncertain identity (perhaps bill n.2) + cock n.1 For a suggestion that the word is related to bilter , recorded since the 17th cent. denoting the moorhen, and for further suggestions arising from this, see W. B. Lockwood Oxf. Bk. Brit. Bird Names (1984) 29/2. However, compare also earlier bidcock n.
