Etymology: < renounce v. + -ment suffix, after Middle French renoncement (French renoncement ) action of renouncing something, renunciation (1267 in Old French in legal use, end of the 13th cent. in specific sense ‘act of renouncing worldly things and worldly life’; earlier in sense ‘announcement, piece of news’ (a1200 in Old French)). Compare Old Occitan renunciamen (1285), Catalan renunciament (14th cent.), Spanish renunciamiento (a1250), Italian †rinunziamento (14th cent.; also †rinunciamento ). Compare earlier renouncing n., renunciation n.
