Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian canaiolo, Canajolo, canaiuolo.

Etymology: < Italian canaiolo (a1779 or earlier; 1763 or earlier as Canajolo and (more fully) Canajolo nero ; also canaiuolo (1791 or earlier)), ultimately < cane dog (see cane corso n.) + -olo , -uolo -ole suffix¹, perhaps with allusion to a supposed preference shown by dogs for the sweet taste of this grape variety. Compare also Italian canaiola, canaiuola, in the same sense (14th cent. as canajuola).

A variety of red wine grape which forms a key component of Chianti wine and is associated particularly with the Tuscany region of Italy; a grapevine producing such a grape. Also more fully Canaiolo nero.
