Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin reni-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin reni-, combining form (in e.g. reniformis reniform adj.) of classical Latin rēnēs (plural) kidneys (see reins n.); compare -i- connective. Compare reno- comb. form.Attested earliest in the first half of the 18th cent. in reniform adj., an adaptation from post-classical Latin. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 19th cent.; an early example is reniportal at sense 2. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin. In renipustulate (see quot. 1859) after scientific Latin renipustulatus (1791 or earlier as specific name in zoology).
