Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Reichswehr.
Etymology: < German Reichswehr the conscripted wartime militia in the Russian Empire (c1875; after Russian gosudarstvennoe opolčenie , literally ‘national militia’ (1874)), German army under the Weimar Republic and the first few years of the Third Reich (1919; earlier used informally to denote German armed forces (1821 or earlier); earlier in general sense ‘defence of the realm’ (1792 or earlier in †Reichswehrstand state of the defence, those responsible for it)) < Reichs- , combining form of Reich Reich n. + Wehr defence, army (Old High German werī , Middle High German were , wer ) < the Germanic base of were v.Not fully naturalized in English.
