Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pītuīta.
Etymology: < classical Latin pītuīta mucus, phlegm, disease of poultry, pip, probably a derivative form < the same Indo-European base as pine n.2 Compare Middle French, French pituite nasal phlegm (1541), one of the four humours of the body (c1575), substance found in vomit (1814).In β. forms perhaps after French. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pitiuˌəi·tă) /pɪtjuːˈʌɪtə/.
Medicine. Now rare and historical.
Glutinous mucus; phlegm.
