Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pittosporum.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pittosporum, genus name (J. Banks in J. Gærtner De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum(1788) I. 286) < ancient Greek πίττα pitch (see pissasphalt n.) + σπόρος spore n., so called from the resinous pulp enveloping the seeds. Compare French pittosporum (1803).

Botany.

Any of the numerous members of the genus Pittosporum (family Pittosporaceae), which are evergreen shrubs or small trees with small (often fragrant) flowers, native to subtropical or warm temperate regions of the Old World, esp. Australasia and China, and often cultivated in warmer climates; (in form Pittosporum) the genus itself.
