Etymology: Partly < scientific Latin Ranales, alliance name ( J. Lindley Nixus plantarum (1833) 9; < Ran- (in scientific Latin Ranunculus ranunculus n.) + classical Latin -ālēs , plural of -ālis -al suffix¹), and partly < scientific Latin Ranales, former order name (see Ranalian adj.).
