Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. federo-amicable Brit. /ˌfɛd(ə)rəʊˈamᵻkəbl/, U.S. /ˌfɛd(ə)roʊˈæməkəb(ə)l/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: federal adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < feder- (in federal adj.) + -o- connective.Found in a number of formations, exemplified below, from the late 18th cent.; apparently first used by Thomas Jefferson (compare quots. 1786, 1804).
