Etymology: < the name of François Rabelais (c1490–1553), French satirist + -ian suffix. Compare French Rabelaisien (adjective) relating to or reminiscent of Rabelais or his works (1828), (noun) follower of Rabelais (1836); compare also Middle French rabelaitique (16th cent.), rabeliste (1571). Compare slightly earlier Rabelaic adj.
