Etymology: < Middle French pout de soye (1389), Middle French (Burgundy) poul de soie (1394), Middle French, French pou-de-soie (1595) < a first element of unknown origin + de de prep. + soie silk (see soy n.²). Compare poult-de-soie n.The β. forms show alteration of the first element after Padua (see Paduan n.), a city with a long tradition of textile manufacture (compare padou n.). The combination of such forms with a final element in -sa, -say, -saye apparently represents a reanalysis as if < Padua + say n.¹ The 17th- and 18th-cent. forms in -swai, -sway represent contemporary French pronunciation of the diphthong -oi- as /wɛ/.
