单词 quodlibet
释义

quodlibetn.

Brit. /ˈkwɒdlᵻbɛt/, U.S. /ˈkwɑdləˌbɛt/
Forms: Middle English quodibet (transmission error), Middle English– quodlibet, 1500s quotlibet, 1600s quolibet, 1600s qvodlibet. Also (in early modern English) represented by the abbreviation qdlibet.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quodlibet.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quodlibetum academic exercise in which a master would discuss questions on any subject, which could be posed by any member of the audience (frequently from 13th cent. in British and continental sources), question posed in such an exercise (15th cent. onwards in phrases such as de quodlibetis disputatur ) < classical Latin quodlibet whatever or whichever you please ( < quod what (see what pron.) + libet it pleases (one): see libitude n.). In sense 2 after German Quodlibet (1544 in this sense), apparently spec. use of Quodlibet, †Quotlibet gallimaufry, jumble (1571, although earlier currency is implied by quotlibetisch, adjective (1538)), academic debate, quibble (a1452 as quotlibet). Compare Middle French quolibet, French quolibet, quodlibet question proposed in scholastic debate (1481 or earlier), triviality, joke (1501), type of musical composition, medley (1817; after German). In quots. 1526, 1571 at sense 1a with reference to the Quaestiones de quolibet (also called Quodlibeta) of Aquinas. The development of the sense ‘quibble’ arises from the abstruse nature of the topics which might be discussed in quodlibets as well as from a general disparagement of scholastic learning. In form quolibet after the Latin ablative singular quōlibet (compare post-classical Latin quaestiones de quolibet (in work titles from 1269), disputatio de quolibet (1293 in a continental source)); compare Middle French, French quolibet (see above). In form quotlibet probably influenced by classical Latin quotlibet however many you please. Compare German †Quotlibet, variant of Quodlibet.
