Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἐξηγητής.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἐξηγητής expounder, interpreter, especially of oracles, dreams, or omens, (at Athens) of sacred rites or customs, in Hellenistic Greek also guide (to temples, etc.) < ἐξηγεῖσθαι (see exegesis n.) + -τής , suffix forming agent nouns. Compare post-classical Latin exegetes (a1540), French exégète (1732), Italian esegeta (a1787), and also German Exeget (early 18th cent. as †Exegeta ). Compare earlier exegetic adj., exegetical adj.In the plural form exegetae after the Latin plural form.
1. Ancient Greek History. An interpreter of sacred law, oracles, dreams, etc.; spec. one appointed in Athens from the Eupatrid nobility or the Eleusinian Eumolpid clan. Cf. exegetes n.
