Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin exegeticus; Greek ἐξηγητικός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin exegeticus (4th cent.), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἐξηγητικός explanatory < ancient Greek ἐξηγητής exegete n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier exegetical adj., exegetically adv., and with use as noun also exegetics n.Compare French exégétique , adjective (1618 or earlier in sense ‘exegetical’ 1625 or earlier in algebra: compare sense A. 3), and also Spanish exegético , adjective (1732), Italian esegetico , adjective (a1565), noun (1797), German exegetisch , adjective (1704), Exegetik , noun (1767 or earlier; 1711 as †Exegetica ). In sense A. 3 after post-classical Latin exegeticus, used in this sense by F. Viète in 1591 ( Opus restitutæ mathematicæ analyseos f. 4).
