1873 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 26 1235 When hydroquinone is heated..with strong sulphuric acid and phthalic anhydride, two bodies are produced... The second compound, quinizarin, is isomeric with alizarin.
1937 Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem. (ed. 4) I. 221/1 Quinizarin gives colours on fabrics mordanted with iron, chromium or aluminium which are about 1/ 10 as deep as those produced by an equal weight of alizarin.
1957 R. H. Thomson Naturally Occurring Quinones iv. 163 Both alizarin and quinizarin can be oxidized to form purpurin (1:2:4-trihydroxyanthraquinone).
1986 E. N. Abrahardt in C. A. Heaton Chem. Industry ii. 86 Quinizarin (1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone) is obtained by condensing phthalic anhydride and p-chlorophenol..in sulphuric acid.
