Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian adaptogen.
Etymology: < Russian adaptogen (coined by N. V. Lazarev, 1965 or earlier) < adapt- (in adaptacija adaptation n.) + -o- -o- connective + -gen -gen comb. form. Compare adapt v., -ogen comb. form.
Any of a group of natural substances, esp. of plant origin, believed to help the body adapt to stress or to return to a more normal functional state following stress.
