Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin crypsis; Greek κρύψις.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin crypsis (1584 as crupsis , in a work by Peter Ramus, or earlier) < ancient Greek κρύψις hiding, concealment < κρυπτός hidden (see crypt n.) + -σις -sis suffix. In sense 2 probably directly < ancient Greek κρύψις.
1. In the rhetorical theory of Peter Ramus (1515–72): the deliberate embellishment or obscuring of plain meaning or logical argument by use of metaphor, digressions, reordering of ideas, etc. Now historical.rare in 18th and 19th centuries.
