Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: crypta n., -al suffix1; Latin crypta , -al suffix1; crypt n., -al suffix1.
Etymology: < crypta n. or its etymon classical Latin crypta + -al suffix1. In sense 2 perhaps independently < crypt n. + -al suffix1.A possible noun use in Bray's ed. of Evelyn's Diary is retranscribed as crypta in E. S. de Beer's ed. (1955).
