Origin: A borrowing from Narragansett. Etymon: Narragansett poquaûhock.
Etymology: < (with loss of the initial syllable) Narragansett poquaûhock (see quot. 1643) < Proto-Eastern Algonquian *pəskw- lump + *-ēh mollusc + Narragansett -ock, animate plural ending; compare Eastern Abenaki pkȣé, pekȣé (i.e. /pkwe/), plural pkȣéak, pekȣahak (i.e. /pkwehak/) (18th cent.).Compare the following earlier occurrence of the Narragansett word in a glossary:1643 R. Williams Key into Lang. Amer. 107* Poquaûhock..This the English call Hens, a little thick shel-fish, which the Indians wade deepe and dive for.
U.S. regional (chiefly New England).
A large, rounded, edible clam, Mercenaria (formerly Venus) mercenaria (family Veneridae), of the Atlantic coast of North America. Also called hard clam, hardshell clam. Cf. clam n.2 1d.
