Etymology: < scientific Latin Pyrenomycetes Pyrenomycetes n., as an inferred singular form. Compare German Pyrenomycet (earliest as Pyrenomyceten , plural (see Pyrenomycetes n.) and dative singular (1884 in the passage translated in quot. 1887 at sense A.), both probably originally representing German inflections of scientific Latin Pyrenomycetes).
