Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin commonitorium memorandum, note, record (4th cent.), petition addressed to a magistrate (4th cent.), letter of instructions addressed to a magistrate, reminder, means of reminding, religious tract (5th cent.), demand note for payment of taxes (6th cent.), use as noun of neuter of commonitorius , adjective (see below). As adjective < post-classical Latin commonitorius petitioning, recommending (4th cent.), advising, warning (5th cent.) < classical Latin commonit- , past participial stem of commonere commonish v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2.With use as noun compare slightly earlier commonition n. With commonitory letters (compare quots. 1570 at sense B., 1747 at sense B.) compare post-classical Latin epistolae commonitoriae (5th cent.), litterae commonitoriae (10th cent.).
