Etymology: < German Pyreneit (A. G. Werner in C. A. S. Hoffmann Handb. der Mineral. (1812) II. 371, now usually as Pyrenäit ) < †Pyreneen , variant of Pyrenäen , the name of the Pyrenees (see Pyrenees n.) + -it -ite suffix¹. Compare French pyrénéite (1819).

Mineralogy.

A greyish-black garnet usually regarded as a variety of andradite.
