Etymology: < Italian regional (Piedmont) Punt e mes, literally ‘point and a half’ (1921 or earlier) < punt point (Italian punto : see point n.¹) + e and + mes half (Italian mezzo : see mezzo adv.).The name is usually explained as having come about from use in Antonio Carpano's bar in Turin, situated near the Turin Stock Exchange, when stockbroker customers began referring to the gradations of bitterness as ‘points’: see further P. V. Price Dict. Wines & Spirits (1980) 269).

A proprietary name for: a bitter-sweet Italian vermouth, made in Turin. Also: a drink of this.
