Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin lacrima , -iform comb. form; Latin lachrymaeformis.
Etymology: In α. forms < classical Latin lacrima tear (see lachryma n.) + -iform comb. form, originally after French lacrimiforme (1846 or earlier; 1828 or earlier as lacrymiforme in a scientific context); in later scientific usage, after scientific Latin lacrimiformis (1824 or earlier). In β. forms < scientific Latin lachrymaeformis (1821 or earlier) < classical Latin lacrimae , genitive of lacrima tear + -formis -form comb. form2.With the formal variation compare discussion at lachryma n. Quot. 1856 appears to be an unacknowledged translation of a French passage in J. Ziegler Études céramiques (1850) 40, which uses lacrimiforme.
