Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pulver-, pulvis.
Etymology: < classical Latin pulver-, pulvis dust, powder (including medicinal powder) < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit palāva chaff, husks, and forms in other Indo-European languages (see palea n.). Compare post-classical Latin pulver powder (14th cent. in British sources, in pulver pro gunnis , pulver pro canonibus , pulver canonum , all ‘gunpowder’; also in an undated source in Du Cange). Compare earlier powder n.1 and the Romance parallels cited at that entry.With use in Pulver Wednesday n. at Compounds compare post-classical Latin pulvis es et in pulverem reverteris ‘dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return’ (Genesis 3:19), from the liturgy used on Ash Wednesday.
