Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin psellismus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin psellismus (a1536 in Erasmus) < Hellenistic Greek ψελλισμός action or fact of stammering < ancient Greek ψελλίζειν to stammer ( < ψελλός (adjective) stammering (of imitative origin, with expressive gemination and a suffix -λό- frequently used to designate infirmities) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -ισμός -ism suffix.
Medicine. rare.
A defect of speech; esp. stammering.
