Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dog n.1, soldier n.
Etymology: < dog n.1 + soldier n. In sense 1 after Cheyenne hotamétaneo’o, lit. ‘dog men’, the name of the most important, distinct, and effective of the Cheyenne warrior societies ( < hótame dog + hetane man + -o’o, plural suffix), and similar expressions in other languages.
Originally and chiefly U.S.
1. Chiefly with capital initials. A member of any of various (elite) military societies among certain North American Indian peoples of the Great Plains. Also occasionally in extended use: a Plains Indian warrior, esp. one regarded as hostile or uncompromising. Now chiefly historical.In quot. 1846 denoting a warrior belonging to such a society among the Brulé Sioux who undertakes policing duties.
