Etymology: < dog n.1 + star n.1, after classical Latin canīcula (see canicule n.) or canisCanis n., or ancient Greek κύων (see cyno- comb. form).
1. (More fully Greater Dog Star) Sirius, the brightest star in the sky and in the constellation Canis Major (the Great Dog). Also (more fully Lesser Dog Star): Procyon, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog).The ‘influence’ of these stars, or of one of them, when rising around the time of sunrise, was formerly thought to cause excessive heat and other harmful effects; see dog day n. 1a.
