Also (more fully Lesser Dog Star): Procyon, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog).The ‘influence’ of these stars, or of one of them, when rising around the time of sunrise, was formerly thought to cause excessive heat and other harmful effects; see dog day n. 1a.
