Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + rose n.1; in β. forms < dog n.1 + rose n.1 In sense 2 after classical Latin rosa canīna, itself after classical Latin cynorrhodon (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek κυνόροδον cynorrhodon n. at cyno- comb. form 2.
1. A growth or gall on the root of a plant; perhaps the Mediterranean plant Cytinus hypocistis, which grows as a parasite on the roots of the rock rose. Obsolete. rare.
