Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on an early Scandinavian lexical item. Etymon: pilliver n.
Etymology: Alteration of pilliver n. (compare forms at that entry), after cod n.3 and the early Scandinavian compound represented by Old Icelandic (rare), Icelandic koddaver , Norwegian (Nynorsk) koddevar , Swedish (regional) kuddever (1803), all in sense ‘pillowcase’. Compare earlier codbere n., and also ware n.3 3b.
Scottish and English regional (northern). Obsolete (rare in later use).
