Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cod n.1, worm n.
Etymology: < cod n.1 + worm n. Compare caddis-worm n. at caddis n.2 Compounds.So called with reference to the protective case formed by the larva: compare cod n.1 6, and later caseworm n. The β. forms probably reflect a phonetic variant (compare Gad n.2). Compare the α. forms at codbait n.1 and later cad n.3 In the γ. forms (attested only in dictionaries) perhaps showing an alteration after cade n.2
Obsolete.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cod n.2, worm n.
Etymology: < cod n.2 + worm n.
A larva of a parasitic nematode worm present in the North Atlantic, Pseudoterranova decipiens (family Anisakidae), found in the tissues of cod and other fishes and marine mammals. Also: the worm itself.The nematode matures and reproduces in marine mammals, producing eggs and larvae which are excreted and then ingested by fishes. Humans may also be affected by the ingestion of infected fish, causing gastrointestinal symptoms; cf. anisakiasis n.
