Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin procul, stant-, stāns, stāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin procul far, far away (see below) + classical Latin stant-, stāns, present participle of stāre to stand (see stand v.), punningly after Protestant n.Classical Latin procul is < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin procerēs proceres n.; with the suffixation compare classical Latin simul at the same time (see simultaneous adj.).
Obsolete.
A Protestant.Apparently an isolated use.
