单词 crena
释义

crenan.

/ˈkriːnə/
Etymology: < modern Latin crēna incision, notch, corresponding to Italian crena notch, nocke (Florio, 1598), French crene, crenne (16th cent.); R. Estienne Petit Dict. 1543 has ‘un cren ou crenne, crena’. The history of this word is very obscure; Latin crēna incision, notch, was formerly read in Pliny, H. N. xi. 37. 68 §180; but it is now held to be an error, so that the word remains without ancient support. But the word, with its derivative crēnātus , has been used freely in modern Latin since the 16th cent. From same date French has also cren , cran noun, and crener verb, crené past participle. An earlier date for the verb is implied by the nouns crenée ( < crēnāta ) = ‘crenel’, and creneure ( < crēnātūra ) crenature, 12th cent. in Godefroy For cren a still higher antiquity is implied by the diminutives crenet and crenel (12th cent. in Littré): see crenel n. Herewith Diez associates also Romansh crenna, Lombard crena, Piedmontese cran. But the origin of crena remains uncertain.
