Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prosonomasia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prosonomasia the giving of a nickname (8th cent. in a British source) < Hellenistic Greek προσονομασία a naming, appellation < ancient Greek προσονομάζειν to call by a name ( < πρός to (see prosody n.) + ὀνομάζειν to name: see onomastic adj.) + -ία -ia suffix1.In sense 2 apparently by confusion (which apparently occurred independently in both the 16th and 20th centuries) with paronomasia n.
