Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin prīvignus, prīvīgnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin prīvignus or prīvīgnus stepson < prīvus separate, single, individual (see prive v.) + an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the base of gignere to beget (see genital adj.). Compare Anglo-Norman privigne stepson (a1415 or earlier), Italian privigno (a1367; now archaic).
Obsolete.
