Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French prescriv-, prescrire.
Etymology: < Middle French prescriv-, stem (e.g. in present plural and present subjunctive) of prescrire (French prescrire ) to enrol, enlist (a person) in an army (first half of the 13th cent. in Old French in an isolated attestation), to release (a person) from an obligation by virtue of lapse of time (1340), (of a right or claim) to lapse by prescription of time (end of the 14th cent. in past participle prescriptes (plural); 1549 in present tense, used reflexively), to lay down as a rule (1544) < classical Latin praescrībere prescribe v., with remodelling after Old French escrire (11th cent.; French écrire ; < classical Latin scrībere : see scribe n.1). Compare slightly earlier prescribe v. and the Romance parallels cited at that entry.Sense 3b is apparently not paralleled in French until later (1738). With sense 4 compare earlier prescription n.2, and see discussion at pro- prefix1. With prescrived adj. at Derivatives compare earlier prescribed adj., prescript adj.1 (and the Romance forms cited at the latter entry).
