Forms: late Middle English adoracioun, late Middle English–1500s adoracion, 1500s adoratioun (Scottish), 1500s–1600s odoration, 1500s– adoration.

Etymology: < Middle French adoracion, Middle French, French adoration act of worship (c1328), method of electing a pope (1605 in the passage translated in quot. 1605 at adore v. 5) and its etymon classical Latin adōrātiōn-, adōrātiō act of worship or prayer, in post-classical Latin also method of electing a pope (1559) < adōrāt- , past participial stem of adōrāre adore v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Catalan adoració (1653), Spanish adoración (14th cent.), Portuguese adoração (15th cent. as adoraçom), Italian adorazione (a1484).Sense 4 apparently shows a learned reinterpretation, based on the erroneous assumption that classical Latin adorare adore v. derives < ad to (see ad- prefix) + ōr- , ōs mouth (see oral adj.). Compare adosculation n. and the following:1614 J. Selden Titles of Honor 40 Προσκυνῶ is truly interpreted in Adosculor (if the composition bee lawfull) or Adoro; both signifying to honor by kissing the hand.
