Etymology: < pre- prefix + advertise v., originally after French †preadvertir to notify beforehand (1358 in Middle French; 1611 in the passage translated in quot. 1611 at sense 1; now préavertir (19th cent.; rare)). Compare Italian preavvertire to notify or inform beforehand (1641).
