Misreading of polyphone n. 1 (see quot. a1684 at polyphone n. 1 for corrected reading).The misreading first occurred in William Bray's 1818 edition of Evelyn's Diaries, and was reproduced in later editions and reprints until the late 19th cent. In subsequent transcriptions the word was corrected to polyphone.
