Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French noiant, noer.
Etymology: Probably < an unattested Anglo-Norman variant of Old French noiant, present participle of Old French, Middle French noer, noier to swim (12th cent.) < classical Latin natāre (see natant adj.). Compare natant adj.
Heraldry.
Of a fish, etc.: represented in fess, or horizontally, as if swimming. Cf. natant adj., haurient adj., urinant adj.Strictly, such a device is described as naiant if it faces to the dexter side and counter-naiant if it faces to the sinister side; cf. counter-naiant adj. at counter- prefix 2m(a).
